ACA QUALIFICATION:
The ACA qualification provides graduates with the skills, expertise and understanding for a career in accounting, business and finance.
The ACA qualification is made up of 15 examinations, alongside 450 days of work experience. For graduates with an accounting or business related degree, or a professional accountancy qualification, credit for prior learning (exemptions) may be available. Depending on your degree, university and module pass mark; ACA students may apply for up to eight credits against professional stage ACA exam modules.
ACA’s unique training produces chartered accountants who are valued in all sectors, from firms of chartered accountants (public practice), commercial organisations and multinationals to public sector bodies. Over 84% of FTSE 100 company boards include at least one qualified ACA - proof that the ACA is really worth having.
There are four essential elements that a trainee must successfully complete to gain the ACA Qualification:
(i) Examinations
(ii) Technical Work Experience (TWE)
(iii) Initial Professional Development (IPD)
(iv) Structured Training in Ethics (STE)
EXAMS & SYLLABUS:
There are 15 ACA exams which are broken down into two stages – the Professional Stage and the Advanced Stage.
PROFESSIONAL STAGE
There are 12 exam modules at the Professional Stage which focus on the acquisition and application of technical skills and knowledge.
Knowledge Modules – six computer-based assessments that provide an introduction to the core concepts underpinning accountancy. The assessments are one and a half hours long and you can sit them at any time (subject to availability) at ICAEW-approved test centres.
Application Modules – six paper-based exams that allow you to develop and apply your technical knowledge and skills. These exams are two and a half hours long and are sat at ICAEW exam centres. There are four exam sessions each year.
ADVANCED STAGE
There are two Technical Integration modules and a Case Study at the Advanced Stage. The Technical Integration exams will require you to integrate and apply your professional, technical and ethical judgement skills to business scenarios.
The Case Study requires you to apply a depth of technical knowledge, integration of learning from across the syllabus and a demonstration of strategic business skills. You can only apply for and sit the Case Study exam once you have begun the third year of your period of approved training.
These exams are sat at ICAEW exam centres and there are two exam sessions each year. The Technical Integration exams are three and a half hours long and the Case Study is four hours.
ENTRY ROUTES:
There are multiple entry routes for students to study the ACA qualification.
Graduates
Each year graduates from a variety of degree backgrounds train for the ACA. This includes students with degrees in engineering, law, modern languages, history, music and philosophy.
AAT-ACA Fast Track students
Designed in partnership between the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and ICAEW, this is a progression route for high calibre AAT students to study the ACA qualification after completing the AAT qualification. Credits for prior learning and prior work experience are available where students are eligible. Students could gain the ACA in just two years once AAT qualified.
Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business students
The Certificate in Finance, Accounting and Business offered by ICAEW, consists of the same six computer-based knowledge modules of the ACA. It is both a stand-alone certificate and a stepping stone into the ACA.
Those with other professional qualifications
Full members and/or affiliates of some international professional bodies can study for the ACA qualification and may be eligible for a two year training agreement.
