You may need to ask yourself some serious questions first! Do I want to study something that I can immerse myself in and become passionate about? Do I want to help people? Do I want to learn clinically relevant skills? Am I prepared to look at the world in a way that is quite different to the average Westerner? Am I interested in the concept of holism – the idea that body, mind and spirit are one and cannot be separated? Do I want to develop an ability to look at research and be able to analyze it in a sophisticated and critical manner? The City College Acupuncture course has been designed to create fantastic practitioners. Don’t be put off by thinking that you require any previous specialist training – we will teach you everything you need to know to become a professional therapist. Many people choose to study acupuncture after having treatment, or by knowing someone who has benefited from treatment. Some of you may be adding to existing skills such as reflexology or massage, or you may be contemplating a complete move away from your current job in IT, banking or the construction business. At interview we will be looking for your commitment to the subject, your ability to study in Higher Education (which may or may not include previous professional qualifications), your life experiences and how you have built upon them, and your ability with people. Course program
Subjects covered in the first two years include
Chinese Medicine Fundamentals and Practice – the concepts behind Chinese medicine and how these relate to conventional Western disease categories. This includes all of the many different ways of diagnosing and treating, including the Five Elements. Although mostly a theoretical module, there is still a lot of hands-on practical work from day one.
Point Location – the pathways and points of the acupuncture channels. Mostly practical, this subject will involve you marking up the acupuncture points and learning how to use them. It is where you will have your first experiences of needling and where you will go on to refine the ancillary practical skills of electro-acupuncture, auricular acupuncture, cupping, gua sha and moxibustion
Western Medical Sciences (anatomy, physiology and pathology) - practitioners of acupuncture need to be able to operate in a safe manner, know the limits of their abilities and be able to talk to conventional medicine practitioners in the language they understand
Personal and Practitioner Development – you will be introduced to both the Western and Oriental models of the therapeutic relationship and be asked to examine your own emotional makeup. Practical days will be spent increasing your awareness of Qi in its many manifestations with introductions to Qi gong, T’ai chi chuan and Tui na massage
The modules in the third year have a focus on the clinical use of acupuncture and the considerations behind going into practice. The modules include
Applied Differential Diagnosis - this module links the study of pathology across the Western and Chinese medical units with an emphasis on safe practice, ‘red flags’, and understanding the most commonly encountered medication
Research – where you will get to write a 3,000 word print-ready article suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed journal (a fantastic piece of promotion to use when you graduate)
Pre Qualifying Development – where we guide you to formulate a business plan for your practice after you qualify. This covers all the legal aspect relating to the practice of acupuncture and enables you to graduate with a clear business strategy to pursue
Clinical Practice – you will spend a minimum of 200 hours taking responsibility for real patients in our multi-bed clinic. You will be supervised taking cases, forming a diagnosis and treating with acupuncture. As you grow in confidence, you will be given increasing autonomy in your actions until you able to work as a stand-alone professional acupuncturist
