Prepares for:A course for practising part-time lecturers/trainers in Further and Adult Education, also suitable for trainers in HM Forces, the Health Service, commerce, workbased learning and public services. The course provides a coherent programme of teacher training for practitioners in post-16 education/training who wish to develop their personal and professional expertise. The course has Professional Standards for Teachers approval and leads to Associate Lecturer Status.
Geared towards:For practising lecturers in Further and Adult Education and trainers in the Forces, Health Service, Local Government, commerce etc.
Requirements:In order to undertake CTLLS 7304 you must have achieved PTLLS 6302 (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector - formerly 7303). You will also need a Level 3 qualification in the subject you are teaching, a satisfactory professional reference and the ability to demonstrate good communication skills. It is essential that you undertake a minimum of 30 hours teaching practice which you must secure for yourself. You are expected to identify a colleague who will act as a mentor. They should be able to help you build on your strengths and become an even more effective learner, teacher and trainer. Your mentor should have a teaching qualification, experience and qualifications of Level 3 and above in the subject you teach.

What you will study

The course covers all aspects of the delivery of teaching including assessment, design and delivery of courses, adults as learners and evaluating learning programmes.

How you will learn

The course is delivered through a variety of teaching methods and you will learn from taught sessions, by self-study and through reflecting on the practice of teaching.

How you will be assessed

Assessment is ongoing throughout the course, based on assignments and observation of practical teaching. You will gather evidence to prove you are competent in all areas of teaching and oral and written communication skills. 24 credits can be achieved.

Further study

The course is a recognised Basic Teaching qualification and can lead to 7405 or other initial teaching qualifications. Once you have achieved the 7304 Certificate you can apply for Associate Lecturer status.

Wakefield College

The city of Wakefield sits at the heart of West Yorkshire, and at the heart of the Wakefield district is Wakefield College, the district’s largest college.

Wakefield College is the largest college in the District and has an impressive track record, having provided education and training in Wakefield and its surrounding area since 1868. Today, the College has its base in three major areas as well as delivering learning in community settings all over the district.

Wakefield College plays a leading role in regional regeneration, perfectly illustrated by our new state of- the-art learning facility - the skillsXchange - at Glasshoughton, replacing the College’s Whitwood Campus and offering skills for employability locally and regionally. Redevelopment of the Wakefield Campus in the city centre is also underway and will bring a modern, vibrant learning environment to the heart of the city without affecting the College’s delivery.

Ofsted inspected our College in May 2010 and the Inspection report made great reading for our staff and for our students. The report said that Wakefield College is rated ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ in 22 of the 23 areas in which it was assessed, and praised the College for its “outstanding approach to working with partners, safeguarding, and equality and diversity.”

A level pass rates have been above 95% for the past six years and were also described as “Outstanding’.

Inspectors further complimented the College for its outstanding support for learners to improve their economic and social well-being and for the highly effective action it takes to prepare learners for employment and progression to higher education.

The College’s ICT provision was also assessed with the inspection team looking at both full and part-time provision at foundation, intermediate and advanced level. Overall, the area achieved a grade one, the highest possible, with inspectors describing outcomes for learners as ‘Outstanding’.

The promotion of safeguarding was also rated ‘Outstanding’ as was the promotion of equality and diversity. Ofsted concluded that “all relevant statutory requirements are rigorously applied and closely monitored by appropriate departments.

The Inspection report also said that Wakefield College “is highly socially inclusive and makes all efforts to remove barriers to learning and contributes significantly to local regeneration”. You can read the full report at www.ofsted.gov.uk.
