Start Date: September

Awarding Body: ABC

The course offers an introduction into counselling theory and an understanding of professional issues, as well as personal development and self awareness in relation to your interactions with other people. It will develop your ability to work interpersonally with others in a diverse range of settings.

The course is a qualification in its own right but also forms part of a structure leading to qualified counsellor status. However, the Level 3 Certificate will not qualify you to practise as a counsellor - to do this, you must undertake further training at Level 4, and you should check the entry requirements with centres offering this training.

The course is also suitable for students who do not wish to become professional counsellors, but want to acquire a repertoire of counselling skills for use in other work areas, such as nursing or teaching. It will also help those who wish to learn more about counselling and the use of counselling skills, but are not sure whether they want to take this interest further.

This course is particularly suitable for adults with some life experience.

What you will study

The programme comprises four units:-

* Personal development for users of counselling skills
* Understanding counselling theory
* Understanding the context for the use of counselling skills
* Using counselling skills in practice
The course will introduce you to some of the underlying psychological theories which underpin the use of counselling skills in any form of helping relationship and examine ethical issues such as confidentiality and boundaries. It is, therefore, useful in the workplace, the voluntary sector, and also in any other situations where people interact.

How you will learn

The course has a formal structure but relies heavily on student participation to provide experience of the use of counselling skills, and this is a vital part of the learning process.

This course principally uses the Person-Centred Approach to counselling, and also adheres to the BACP Ethical Framework for Counselling.

How you will be assessed

There are around 20 short assignments (rather like ‘mini-essays’) to complete on the course, and you will need to spend around two to three hours per week on independent study outside course time.

Entry Requirements

Wakefield College recommends successful completion of the ABC Level 2 Counselling Concepts course, or an equivalent introductory counselling course, although in some cases appropriate life or work experience may be sufficient.

It is desirable for students to be literate (to GCSE grade C English, or equivalent), and to have good IT and study skills.

The course also involves experiential learning and self-awareness exercises in group situations. This can be emotionally demanding, and can also sometimes affect personal relationships outside the course.

Students are invited to consider their level of emotional wellbeing, and whether this is the right time for them to study this course. Training of this nature is not advised if students have recently suffered personal crises or emotional difficulties. Partners and persons in close relationships are discouraged from attending the same course and evidence will be sought that students are not using the course principally as personal therapy.

Attendance

The course duration is a minimum of 145 hours and will ordinarily run from September to June. The course may commence at other points in the year subject to sufficient demand. Each individual class will last four hours.

A minimum attendance of 80% is required for students to complete the course successfully, although all students are expected to aim for 100% attendance. Attendance is mandatory at two Saturday workshops.

Further study

After successful completion of this Level 3 course, students will be able to undertake further training in a variety of subject areas, at both further and higher education level, including Level 4 counselling diplomas. However, progression to Level 4 is not automatic, and students should check entry requirements with the course provider.

Career opportunities

The certificate course can lead on to training as a professional counsellor. Alternatively the course can be used to enhance other vocational work in both the paid and voluntary sector.

How to apply

Once sufficient numbers have indicated an interest, you will be sent an application pack. The pack contains an application form, details of a 500-word assignment to complete, and a request for an academic reference. Those meeting the standard will be interviewed, usually in July.

Wakefield College

The city of Wakefield sits at the heart of West Yorkshire, and at the heart of the Wakefield district is Wakefield College, the district’s largest college.

Wakefield College is the largest college in the District and has an impressive track record, having provided education and training in Wakefield and its surrounding area since 1868. Today, the College has its base in three major areas as well as delivering learning in community settings all over the district.

Our College is committed to working in partnership with local schools, employers and learning providers to transform learning, attainment, achievement and progression across the district. We have good relationships with schools across the Wakefield district and the College has a broad mix of former pupils from across the region.

The College is home to almost 15,000 students, of all ages and abilities, studying a broad range of courses, from pre-entry level through to higher education and professional qualifications.

Wakefield College plays a leading role in regional regeneration, perfectly illustrated by our new state of- the-art learning facility - the skillsXchange - at Glasshoughton, replacing the College’s Whitwood Campus and offering skills for employability locally and regionally. Redevelopment of the Wakefield Campus in the city centre is also underway and will bring a modern, vibrant learning environment to the heart of the city without affecting the College’s delivery.

Ofsted inspected our College in May 2010 and the Inspection report made great reading for our staff and for our students. The report said that Wakefield College is rated ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ in 22 of the 23 areas in which it was assessed, and praised the College for its “outstanding approach to working with partners, safeguarding, and equality and diversity.”

A level pass rates have been above 95% for the past six years and were also described as “Outstanding’.

Inspectors further complimented the College for its outstanding support for learners to improve their economic and social well-being and for the highly effective action it takes to prepare learners for employment and progression to higher education.

The College’s ICT provision was also assessed with the inspection team looking at both full and part-time provision at foundation, intermediate and advanced level. Overall, the area achieved a grade one, the highest possible, with inspectors describing outcomes for learners as ‘Outstanding’.

The promotion of safeguarding was also rated ‘Outstanding’ as was the promotion of equality and diversity. Ofsted concluded that “all relevant statutory requirements are rigorously applied and closely monitored by appropriate departments.

The Inspection report also said that Wakefield College “is highly socially inclusive and makes all efforts to remove barriers to learning and contributes significantly to local regeneration”. You can read the full report at www.ofsted.gov.uk.

Our College works hard to be at the centre of its local community, delivering what the District needs and students want. See what we have to offer and come and join us. You won’t be disappointed.
