What you will study<br />
<br />
In Year 1 you will focus on the development of technique in Ballet, Contemporary and Jazz dance underpinned by principles of the creative and choreographic process and performance styles. You will explore the historical context of performance through theory and practical workshops and you will be involved in a minimum of two performances.<br />
<br />
In Year 2 the emphasis moves to creative endeavour, audition technique and application of dance technique. You will actively contribute to choreographic projects utilising skills and techniques gained throughout the course and you will gain more experience of performing in a variety of ways including a school tour. As well as learning about your chosen art form you will also learn how to start a career in this area. You will be involved in a minimum of two performances culminating in a festival at the end of each year.<br />

How you will learn<br />
<br />
This is a practical dance based course with many opportunities to perform before public audiences and with academic and theory work threaded throughout. The assignments and projects you complete are based on the kind of challenges you will face once you are employed in the dance industry.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

* 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English, plus Maths at grade D (or equivalent), or<br />
* Level 2 Diploma at Merit<br />

If you do not have the relevant levels of literacy and numeracy qualifications, we can assess you.<br />

Attendance<br />
<br />
You will be required to attend a minimum of four days per week. You may also be required for extra rehearsals and performances in the evening and at weekends. As part of your learning you are expected to attend all College performances and some professional performances at other venues and theatres.<br />
<br />
Further study<br />
<br />
You may continue onto the Higher National Diploma in Dance (HND), offered at Wakefield College, or to other Higher Education courses in related areas such as Performing Arts, Media Performance, Theatre Practice, Dance and Sports. <br />

What you will study<br />

Through practical classes you will develop a wide range of dance performance techniques drawn from the work of world renowned choreographers and dance theorists. You will grow as technical dancers, experiencing a range of classes in Contemporary, Jazz Dance, Physical Theatre and Classical Ballet which will increase your strength, flexibility and versatility. Underpinning the practical aspects of the course is the exploration of theoretical concepts of dance and its creation and presentation. This course will provide you with the opportunity to apply your experience in the studios in a diverse range of performance arenas such as community based contexts, choreographic projects and theatre based performances<br />

60% Practical Classes and 40% Theoretical<br />

How you will learn<br />
<br />
All projects are linked to the performing arts industry to give a real flavour of working as a dancer, choreographer, teacher and theorist. A variety of teaching and learning methods will be used that encourage and facilitate learners&rsquo; creative and artistic development and bring together, wherever possible, practice and theory.<br />
<br />
Methods used will encourage both independent and collaborative learning through use of practical workshops, interactive lectures, resource-based learning, individual and group work, tutorials, discussion, critiques and rehearsals.<br />
<br />
Individual or group projects will culminate in public and non-public performance. Students will critically reflect on their own performance and that of others.<br />
<br />
Residentials, visiting companies, attendance of performances and residentials will be used to broaden learners&rsquo; experiences.<br />
<br />
How you will be assessed<br />
<br />
There is a minimum of one piece of assessed work per unit.<br />
<br />
Appropriate assessment methods are designed to match the learning outcomes for each unit. Formative assessment will be on-going within teaching and learning sessions and will comprise peer and self assessment as well as tutor assessment.<br />
<br />
<br />
Your tutors will help you to track your areas of achievement for each module and to identify and discuss with you opportunities to collate evidence for module achievement<br />
You will be graded using the Edexcel guidelines and specifications to assess whether the evidence produced for assignments has reached the required standard at pass, merit or distinction level. You will be given constructive feedback throughout your course to help enhance your development and understanding of the dance industry.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />
<br />
240 UCAS points gained through A Levels or a Level 3 Diploma in a related subject. Mature learners over 21 may be accepted on non-academic or vocational skills and this can be discussed. We also welcome applications from those with non-standard qualifications. <br />
<br />
All applicants will be required to attend an audition consisting of contemporary technique class that will include short choreographic tasks and lengthy sequences. Applicants are to prepare a 1.30 minutes solo of their choice and write a critical and reflective evaluation of themselves to assess academic standards. After the audition a short interview will take place to discuss individual needs. <br />

Attendance<br />
<br />
Full-time for two years. You can expect to attend College for a minimum of three days per week and to take part in evening performances.
