Venue Wakefield
Programme Level Level 3
Full-time/Part-time Full Time
Duration 2 years
Start Date September
Day/Evening Day
Awarding Body AQA

What you will study

AS Level (Year 1)

Unit 1 - Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity
An introduction to the fundamental properties and nature of matter, radiation and quantum phenomena. You will also study electricity and its applications.

Unit 2 - Mechanics, Materials and Waves
This unit introduces vectors and develops knowledge and understanding of forces and energy from GCSE Additional Science. Materials are studied in terms of their bulk properties and tensile strength and you will gain an in-depth knowledge of the characteristics, properties and applications of waves.

Unit 3 - Investigative and Practical Skills in AS Physics
Experimental and investigative activities to develop your practical skills.

A2 Level (Year 2)

Unit 4 - Fields and Further Mechanics
Advances the study of momentum, introduces circular and oscillatory motion and gravitation. The unit covers electric and magnetic fields, together with basic electromagnetic induction.

Unit 5 - Nuclear and Thermal Physics + Option Topic
The first section of this unit looks at the characteristics of the nucleus, the properties of unstable nuclei and how energy is obtained from the nucleus. The thermal properties of materials and the nature of gases are studied in depth. The second part of the unit currently examines when and how the major conceptual changes in the subject took place and their effect on present day technologies. Topics include wave-particle duality and Einstein's theory of special relativity including, of course, the world's most famous equation.

Unit 6 - Investigative and Practical Skills in A2 Physics
Further experimental and investigative activities.

How you will learn

You will be learning through investigation, experimentation, demonstrations and lectures. Students will discuss and apply their learning to several contexts and to the solution of worksheet problems. Assistance is provided during lectures/class and homework is set weekly. Testing during and at the end of modules helps staff and students to monitor and support their progress. A full range of past examination papers is available and is used to help students prepare for end of course examinations in June.

How you will be assessed

Each module is assessed by a written examination. Units 3 and 6 are both assessed through an investigative skills assignment which involves students answering a number of questions on experimental data they have collected.

Attendance

As a full-time student you will be expected to attend all classes as specified on your timetable and all personal tutorial sessions. The course lasts one year for the AS qualification and two years for the full A Level.

How to apply

Complete a full-time application form.
AS/A Level Physics (Ref: 57867) This course is on Course For Me.
