The course is taught by Christina Jones LCGI,

There are a maximum of two places on each course because we feel it is very important that our students get as much as possible from our courses. The student will be doing hands on grooming from day one, as we feel this is the only way to learn. Each day is split into two; the morning and the afternoon, the student will be doing a dog (each dog will be washed, dried, brushed out and clipped/trimmed by the student) in both sessions and some time will be set aside for course work.
At this moment in time, there are no licensing laws regulating dog grooming and anyone can groom without an official qualification. All students will be taught to exam standard and will be strongly encouraged to sit their City & Guilds Advanced 7750. The exam requires you to be knowledgeable, competent and professional in all aspects of dog grooming and running a business including business laws and Health & Safety. The exam contains 1 written paper and 3 practical exams (which will be covered on the course). At the end of our course each successful student will receive a certificate.
By the end of the course the student will have the skills needed to either start their own grooming business or get employment in a salon where they can further their skills and knowledge.
This course will give you the “first steps” in becoming a professional groomer. Day courses or specific breed courses are also available at a later date to increase your skills and techniques.
Other modules can be added to the above course if you would
like to learn more business knowledge/accounting/marketing.
We can also advise & arrange for all equipment needed upon start up to be supplied at preferential rates from our suppliers who we have built up extremely good relations with over the last 14 years and tested most of the equipment so we know what works in a busy salon.
A bit about me
The course is taught by (me) Christina Jones, proprietor of Dashin’ Hounds. I started grooming in 1996 when after acquiring a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier I decided to do a course. I started off in my garage, planning to do a few dogs a week and it snowballed from there. I opened my first salon in 1997 in Carrickfergus with several staff that I trained myself after hours. That same year I won the Shell Live Wire Young Business Person (East).
I started to breed and show Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers and ran a national help line for people interested in the breed. In 1999 I opened my second salon in Belfast, Ballyhackamore, and worked between my two salons. In 2003 I moved premises to Dundonald and sold my Carrickfergus salon so I could concentrate on training others as well as running the salon day to day. I am currently the owner of a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, a Black Russian Terrier (or small horse), English Cocker Spaniel and have owned a Standard Poodle.
I hold an L.C.G.I in Dog Grooming, a City & Guilds 7750 Advanced Grooming Certificate and am currently sitting my Higher Diploma Exams (2 written papers and 7 practicals which take several years) which I am half way through. I have been to many seminars and workshops throughout the UK and am always learning new skills and methods to achieve greater standards throughout my business.
I am passionate about teaching others and sharing any new knowledge or skills. I have successfully trained many students over the last 11 years and many have gone on to open their own businesses both here in the North and south of Ireland and others in the UK and Australia.
I am also the N Ireland representative for the Pet Care Trust and British Dog Grooming Association, which deal with the City & Guilds examinations.
Course Availability
Training hours are on a part time basis (normally two days a week). If you have some dates in mind, please contact me to discuss training and I will try to be as flexible as the Business allows. Please also bear in mind that if there is a future date you are interested in, it is better to book it early to avoid disappointment, as courses only run on certain months of the year and tend to book up very early.
Different people have different needs and the courses run on individual requirements. Please be advised that if more hours are needed, more advanced courses can be catered for (please ask for more details).
Whilst dog grooming is most certainly hard work, it is also very rewarding, can be lucrative and flexible, allowing most people to start gradually whilst fitting it around current jobs and commitments until such time as your diary books up.
I look forward to hearing from you very soon and helping you with your new career.
Remember. Whilst others training courses may teach you to pass an exam. Dashin’ Hounds will teach you to start your own business to enable you to earn money and achieve the future you desire!
