| Prepares for: | The difference between success and failure in sport, between gold and silver, first and last, is often the narrowest of margins. Not only the skills and abilities of the athletes but every element of their performance must be fine tuned and perfected. Lifestyle, training, tactics, diet, fitness, psychology and much more all play a part in creating success in sport. This course develops your awareness of all these factors and helps you work towards sporting excellence. It is the ideal course for those who have a talent in sport and want learn more about how to be successful. |
| Requirements: | The course is offered in two ways, equivalent to either two or three A Levels. Diploma (two A Level equivalent) - minimum of four GCSEs at A* - C including English Language or Merit pass in Level 2 Sport. Extended Diploma (three A Level equivalent) - five GCSEs at A* - C including English Language and at least two other different subjects, or a Distinction pass in Level 2 Sport plus suitable tutor reference. You will also need Level 2 numeracy. If you do not have the relevant numeracy qualification, we can assess your current level. Students will also have to gain a place in one of our athlete development programmes, this is done through a sporting assessment. |

What you will study
A selection of units related to the performance and excellence of sports performers including:-
* Strength and Conditioning - How athletes are tested and trained to be at their physical peak
* Nutrition - how athletes should eat to maximise their training and improve performance
* Technical and tactical skills - video analysis of how elite teams play in order to learn how to perform at the highest level
* Athlete's Lifestyle - how to manage your lifestyle in the high pressure environment of elite sport
* Sports Coaching
and many more.
How you will learn
The course will ask you to learn in a variety of ways, including classroom work with tutor support and a large amount of independent learning, where you will be required to research and complete assignments in your own time.
How you will be assessed
By several different ways. Some written work, presentations, group and individual work. Some assessments will be linked to your performance on the Athlete Development Programme.
Entry Requirements
Diploma - minimum four GCSEs at A* - C including English Language or Merit pass in Level 2 Sport.
Extended Diploma - five GCSEs at A* - C including English Language and at least two other different subjects, or a Distinction pass in Level 2 Sport plus suitable tutor reference.
You will also need Level 2 numeracy. If you do not have the relevant numeracy qualification, we can assess your current level.
Acceptance on the ADP is through the trials process.
Attendance
This is a full-time course and you can expect to attend for around 16 hours per week for classes, with an additional 14 hours for training and matches, Monday to Friday in term time.
Further study
Students can go on to do a wide range of other course both in Higher Education or in more vocational courses.
In the past students have gone to study Sports Coaching, Sport studies, Sports Therapy and Strength and Conditioning, at various universities across the country. Several students from the course have gone on to secure scholarships at university through their sporting achievements.
Some students may also want to pursue a more career-focused path, in either coaching, massage or personal training, all of each are available through Wakefield College.
Career opportunities
Progress into a career as a professional or semi-professional sports performer. Alternatively, work with elite athletes or long term athlete development programmes, in training and fitness, coaching, PE teaching, sports consultancy and more. Many of these careers demand higher levels of study.

Wakefield College is the largest college in the District and has an impressive track record, having provided education and training in Wakefield and its surrounding area since 1868. Today, the College has its base in three major areas as well as delivering learning in community settings all over the district.

The College is home to almost 15,000 students, of all ages and abilities, studying a broad range of courses, from pre-entry level through to higher education and professional qualifications.
Wakefield College plays a leading role in regional regeneration, perfectly illustrated by our new state of- the-art learning facility - the skillsXchange - at Glasshoughton, replacing the College’s Whitwood Campus and offering skills for employability locally and regionally. Redevelopment of the Wakefield Campus in the city centre is also underway and will bring a modern, vibrant learning environment to the heart of the city without affecting the College’s delivery.
Ofsted inspected our College in May 2010 and the Inspection report made great reading for our staff and for our students. The report said that Wakefield College is rated ‘Outstanding’ or ‘Good’ in 22 of the 23 areas in which it was assessed, and praised the College for its “outstanding approach to working with partners, safeguarding, and equality and diversity.”
A level pass rates have been above 95% for the past six years and were also described as “Outstanding’.
Inspectors further complimented the College for its outstanding support for learners to improve their economic and social well-being and for the highly effective action it takes to prepare learners for employment and progression to higher education.
The College’s ICT provision was also assessed with the inspection team looking at both full and part-time provision at foundation, intermediate and advanced level. Overall, the area achieved a grade one, the highest possible, with inspectors describing outcomes for learners as ‘Outstanding’.
The promotion of safeguarding was also rated ‘Outstanding’ as was the promotion of equality and diversity. Ofsted concluded that “all relevant statutory requirements are rigorously applied and closely monitored by appropriate departments.
