Course program

‘Reaching Out’ is a one-day conference focussing on creative and imaginative ways to use music to engage young people, whatever the challenges they face. Whether because of language barriers, behavioural issues or a variety of additional needs, music can often be the most powerful way to reach out to young people in challenging circumstances. The day will offer a range of workshops, presentations and discussion opportunities to explore effective ways to connect with children and young people through music-making in both mainstream and special schools.

Sound Connections

Sound Connections was established as a charity in 2002 to deliver the London Youth Music Action Zone. The YMAZ brought together eight successful community music organisations that were delivering high quality work to young people across the capital. These organisations were: ADFED, Bigga Fish, CM, Midi Music Company, Overtones, Raw Material, Urban Development and Weekend Arts College.

The organisation refined its mission of strengthening London’s youth music training and development sector and by 2005 was also delivering MusicLeader London, a national service providing support and guidance to music leaders working with children and young people, in addition to the YMAZ.

Membership of Sound Connections grew from the original eight founding members and by 2006 over 1,000 individuals and organisations were receiving a regular newsletter and accessing training opportunities, seminars and a range of partnership projects with children and young people.

Sound Connections also contributed to the development of the Music Manifesto focusing on coordination of the sector and the workforce development strands. At the same time Sound Connections also became involved with the Music Education Council (MEC), the National Association of Music Educators (NAME) and the National Music Council (NMC).

Our strategy was to seek opportunities to contribute to debate and policy in a constructive and supportive way by drawing on our knowledge and emerging membership base.

In 2007 Sound Connections started delivering the Youth Music Mentor scheme in partnership with a broader selection of music organisations across London. The YMAZ was also developed to commission a wider range of smaller projects that aligned more closely with the priorities of Youth Music.

By 2008 membership had increased to over 2,000 who were accessing a wide range of services and benefits. Also in 2008 Sound Connections secured the Sing Up Area Leader London contract and started deliver a programme of training and support to music teachers and musicians in primary schools. A new project, ‘Sounds in the City’, which increased our partnership work with young people also began with support from London Councils.

March 2010 saw the launch of our young Londoners music council, Wired4Music, which brought the voice of young people into the planning and strategy of the organisation as well as enabling their voice to be heard across London.

Over the last 12 months partnerships have been developed with the music services across London, the Greater London Authority and other key agencies.
