This course is aimed at those looking to carry out portable appliance testing (PAT) in the workplace. The course is based on the IET Code of Practice for In Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.

The maximum class size is 8 people. This allows candidates to ask questions and receive individual guidance from our experienced instructors. The course uses practical examples whenever possible to cover the syllabus and candidates gain hands on practical testing experience. The course includes a practical assessment. Candidates will receive a certificate of attendance following the course.

All candidates will receive a comprehensive training manual. This is over 100 pages, most with colour diagrams. Candidates wishing to study at home prior to attending the course can request a pdf copy of the training manual.

We provide everything required for the training. Candidates will have the opportunity to use a variety of different test instruments. Candidates may also bring their own test equipment with them to use if preferred.

The course covers - identifying equipment class and types, selecting and carrying out tests suitable for the equipment, interpreting the test results, the requirements for the visual inspection, frequency of inspection and testing, record keeping and labelling.

The course starts at 9am and finishes around 4pm. A buffet lunch and refreshments are included.

Course Content:
• Basic electrical principles
• Identification of equipment types and classifications
• Visual Inspection
• Earth continuity tests
• Insulation resistance tests
• Protective conductor/touch current test
• Polarity checks
• Functional and load checks
• Additional tests for RCDs and microwave ovens
• Labelling and record keeping requirements
• Frequency and management of testing
• Short test and practical assessment
• Choosing a suitable tester

At the end of the course students will be able to:
• Distinguish between different appliance types
• Complete a formal visual inspection and identify faults
• Perform the correct tests and determine limits appropriate to the equipment type
• Select appropriate intervals for the inspecting and testing process

• A copy of our own PAT manual for each delegate
• All necessary PAT equipment for training purposes
• Certificate of competency upon the successful completion
• Telephone support service following the training

The course is based on the IEE Code of Practice and is made as practical as possible with the emphasis on hands on learning. Delegates will receive a certificate of competence upon completion of a short test.

City & Guilds 2377-22 - We also run a City & Guilds 2377 course for delegates looking for a recognised PAT qualification. The 2377-22 Certificate for the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment is a nationally recognised qualification designed for those undertaking the inspection and testing of electrical equipment. This course is run over two days and makes use of practical examples wherever possible to cover the 2377-22 syllabus. Students gain hands-on experience through testing a wide variety equipment. The course includes a short practical test and a multiple choice C&G exam. Upon successful completion candidates will receive a City & Guilds 2377-22 certificate. It is not necessary to have any previous experience or qualifications. This course is ideal for anyone looking to pursue a career or start a business in PAT testing.
