Diploma in Gnosticicm

This course is a study of the philosophy of Gnosticism as expressed in many different forms from its remotest origins in antiquity to modern cultural forms. The field covers both personal approaches to one's divine nature and different spiritual systems and sects throughout history. It is not only a form of early Christianity – it has taken various religious, spiritual and cultural forms and in recent times has been part of Western Esotericism, the works of Carl Jung, and has influenced twentieth-century occultism, arts and popular music. The basic message of Gnosticism is that human beings are gods in potential, and that rigid theological/ideological systems and also materialism both hide the perception of our free and divine nature. Gnosticism also asserts that the physical world is neither wholly good nor wholly evil but that there is ongoing and ancient strife between two opposing forces.

Topics included:

Ancient origins of Gnostic ideas

Jewish themes in Gnostic thought

Christian origins

Early Gnosticism

Diploma in Dead Sea Scrolls Studies (distance learning)

Course overview

This course provides a detailed account of the discovery and preservation of the Dead Sea Scrolls, their relationship to the Old and New Testaments and to apocryphal scriptures; the belief systems and culture of the Qumran group; and controversies and fringe theories surrounding the Scrolls. The set text provides new perspectives on interpreting the Biblical evidence. It provides clear explanations of the diversity of ancient scriptural and related texts and how the Scrolls have helped scholars revise their theories about the provenance and significance of the Biblical documents. The non-Biblical scrolls are also extensively discussed, revealing the beliefs and rules of the Qumran community. This unit is suitable for students new to Scroll study or for advanced students who will find additional information and commentary.

The course will allow students to evaluate some of the sensationalist claims (including conspiracy theories) that have been made about the Scrolls in popular books, and to appreciate the Scrolls discoveries as important for the history of religion and for understanding the people of ancient Israel and the development of early Christianity.

In this course you will learn about:

How the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered
Archaeology of Qumran
Technology in Scrolls research including dating and preservation
Diversity of ancient Old Testament texts and how they compare with the Scrolls
Can the Scrolls help us understand how the books of the Bible came to be fixed as a canon?
The ancient religious writings (apocrypha and pseudepigrapha) that were not included in the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible)
What the nonbiblical Scrolls tell us about Qumran
The laws and customs of Qumran society
The beliefs, apocalyptic mindset and identity of the Qumran community - were they Essenes?
How the Dead Sea Scrolls authors interpreted the Bible
The relationship between the Scrolls and the New Testament
Some alternative or "fringe" interpretations of the Scrolls
Relevance of the Scrolls to the Book of Revelation
Controversies in Scrolls research

Diploma in Anger Management

Course overview

The course contains a complete cognitive-based programme for introducing anger management to clients; teaching them ways of altering their thoughts, feelings and behaviour; educating them in reducing the impact of triggering thoughts or events, and improving social skills; developing cognitive and rational coping skills; developing a realistic philosophy of life; forgiving others; and avoiding recurrence of problem anger.

Different intervention plans are presented that can be used with different client groups, avoiding a “one size fits all” model. Sample client handouts, information sheets and step-by-step intervention schedules are provided.

Tips for managing the therapist’s own anger are also included: therapy can be a stressful profession. Therapists are only human and can have similar feelings to clients.

The main focus of the anger management plans is on self-referring adults or members of self-help or support groups. The course can also be a useful part of preparation for dealing with non-self-referring groups (clients referred by employer, courts, family, etc., adolescents and clients with learning disabilities) though further specialist training and/or professional backup is highly recommended for those categories as their motivation is likely to be lower and they may have more complex issues.

Method of study

Textbook study. Written assignments based on textbooks and exercises. Assignment questions are issued by email and students return their written work by email. Grades and feedback are issued by email.
